An Oboe in the Choro
Harold Emert, an American – Brazilian oboist who visited Pune in February 1987, has rediscovered The Poona Music Society and shares some of his concert films with us.
His latest offering An Oboe in the Choro, is of a unique concert he did with Choro musicians at the Magistrates’ Museum in Rio de Janeiro.
Choro which in Portuguese means Cry or Lament, originated in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, and can be described as the New Orleans Jazz of Brazil. Even though it is joyous music, it is called Choro because of the style of playing which has slides and portamenti reminiscent of wailing. In this concert, Harold Emert plays oboe with guitar, ukulele and tambourine.
Do enjoy this unique concert.
