About this event

Arties Festival is now in its 11th edition. Its popularity has grown over the years, and it brings the finest young musicians to India. Arties musicians are multifaceted artists who share a passion for music and travel. They have all won several international contests, play on some of the most prestigious stages worldwide, and love to travel to India.

Quatuor Ebène has grown to become one of today’s foremost quartets on the international scene. Recently, they were specially selected to take part in the BBC’s esteemed “New Generation Artists” scheme, closely supported by the Borletti-Buitoni Foundation, which sponsored their first, critically acclaimed live recording of works by Haydn as well as a second CD devoted to works of Bartók.

The quartet has been heard throughout Europe, Asia and the United States in some of the most prestigious concert halls including Vienna’s Musikverein, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Berlin’s Philarmonie and New York’s Carnegie Hall. In 2009 the Ebènes were also featured as part of Wigmore Hall’s Haydn Cycle in London, alongside the Hagen, Emerson and Arcanto quartets.

These four French musicians have class and are perhaps the most creative ensemble on the international chamber music scene today. No other quartet moves with such ease and enthusiasm between different styles and, even if the foursome only rarely presents live programmes that combine classical music and Jazz.

Romain Descharmes was born in Nancy, France. He began piano studies at the Conservatoire Régional du Grand Nancy, where he won, at age 14, a gold medal in 1996. In 1998, he moved to Paris and studied at the Paris Conservatoire. Romain Descharmes was awarded First Prize in the Dublin International Piano Competition in 2006, leading him to perform recitals all over the world. He is much sought after as a chamber musician and has been a frequent member of Arties Festival.

Gauthier Herrmann started studying cello at the age of eight with Nicole Daihnaut. In 1998, he joined the class of Marcel Bardon in the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris (CNR) where he obtained a first prize in cello in 2000. Gauthier was quickly destined for chamber music and founded the Trio con Fuoco which won several prizes and has travelled all over the world. Gauthier started visting India in 2001 and in 2008, created Arties Festival which has brought outstanding musicians from Europe to play chamber music in India.
