SUMMARY:Jayant Sankrityayana\, guitar and bass and Rosemarie Eilert\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Jayant Sankrityayana\, guitar and bass\nRosemarie Eilert\, pian
o\n\nIn a programme of Brouwer: Concerto De Toronto (to John Williams) and
Works by Bill Evans\n\nThe programme is in two sections.\n\nPart One cele
brates the Cuban composer-conductor Leo Brouwer’s longstanding contribut
ion to the classical music oeuvre by featuring his Concerto de Toronto\, w
hich was originally commissioned by the Guitar Society of Toronto for guit
ar and chamber orchestra in 1987\, and premiered with John Williams on the
guitar. This Concerto\, his fourth\, exemplifies Brouwer as a composer no
t restricted to the solo classical guitar alone (for which he has added pr
odigiously to the repertoire) but with a much broader emotive and textural
canvas. This recital will feature a piano reduction of the orchestral sco
re\, as arranged by Daniel Toussaint.\n\nPart Two presents the composition
al work of the jazz pianist Bill Evans. Noted for having brought the consi
derable expressive sensitivity usually identified with classical music to
his own deeply shaded and tone-perfect improvisational approach\, Bill Eva
ns also wrote his own jazz compositions\, though this aspect of his legacy
has been relatively obscured by his own authoritative interpretation of m
aterial by others. A selection of pieces by Evans will be performed here i
n the piano-guitar and piano-bass duo formats which he used on several occ
asions\, with the intent of recreating the subtle\, intuitive exchanges so
  characteristic of his work.\n\nThe Performers:\n\nRosemarie Eilert\, curr
ently based in Sydney\, Australia\, has lived and worked in several countr
ies\, notably India\, as an educator and a performer. An avid and dedicate
d pianist since her early years\, she has continued to express both sides
of her musical persona – from mainstream jazz to classical music – wit
h the substantial cross-flow eminently evident in her approach. Rose has p
erformed regularly at venues across Australia\, and is well known to Pune
audiences for her jazz concerts.\n\nJayant S is a Pune-based classical gui
tarist and jazz bassist. These apparently diverging musical routes do not
contradict each other for him\, but have exercised a combined influence on
his perception of both instruments. He has performed frequently in ensemb
le settings with Rose and other noted jazz players\, and is deeply involve
d with modern classical guitar repertoire\, which he has had a longstandin
g interest in. He is one of the core members of the Pune Guitar Society.\n
\nThe duo has played earlier at the Mazda Hall in 2011\, under the aegis o
 f the Poona Music Society.\n\n
