Kuldeep Barve and Justin Scarimbolo, guitar
In a programme of Erik Satie: Ogive No. 1, Gymnopédie Nos. 1-3, Gnossienne Nos. 1-7, Vexations and Danses de Travers Nos. 1 & 2
Kuldeep Barve and Justin Scarimbolo of the Pune Guitar Duo perform a selection of works from the French bohemian composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), which they have arranged for two guitars. The music, composed for piano in late-nineteenth-century Paris during the height of the Belle époque period, was conceived in a deliberately mystical vein. Aspects of Satie’s biography will be woven into the performance to provide further insight into this esoteric music.
Kuldeep Barve is a guitarist, teacher, composer and writer based in Pune. He is a faculty for Western Music at FLAME University, Pune and the SPPU (Pune University). While his musical explorations have been mainly in the realm of western classical music, his deep interest and active role in improvised forms of music such as jazz and Indian classical music has immensely influenced his musical thought and oeuvre. He is a founder member of the Pune Guitar Society, an organization dedicated to classical and jazz guitar. He is also deeply involved in film music and has composed music for films, documentaries and art installations.
Justin Scarimbolo is a classical guitarist, Hindustani sitarist and ethnomusicologist based in Pune. He received his BA in Music from the State University of New York College at Fredonia, where he studied both classical guitar and Music Therapy. During that time, Justin travelled to Pune and met his sitar teacher, Ms. Jyoti Thakar, whose family history in music inspired him to pursue a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of California Santa Barbara, which was funded by a Fulbright-Hayes fellowship. In Pune, Justin taught as a visiting professor at the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts. He is currently involved in arranging the works of Erik Satie for solo guitar, guitar duo and voice and guitar, which he hopes to perform, record and publish in the future.
