Programme: Osvaldo Golijov (b. 1960): Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind (1994)
Principal clarinetist of Concertgebouw orchestra, Olivier Patey is a prizewinner of the ARD International Music Competition and the Carl Nielsen International Music Competition. Hehas regularly performed with the orchestra of the Opéra de Paris, with the OrchestrePhilharmonique de Radio France, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Kammerorchester, Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. He was Principal clarinetist of Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic before joining Concertgebouworkest. Patey is also active as a chamber musician and is involved with the Artie’s Festival in India as a co-founder of the Arties Records label. Along with his wife Diet Tilanus and other colleagues from the Concertgebouw orchestra in Amsterdam, they have recorded this performance and have kindly sent it to us.
Golijov’s amazing piece is based on Isaac The Blind, the great kabbalist rabbi of Provence, who dictated a manuscript in which he asserted that all things and events in the universe are product of combinations of the Hebrew alphabet’s letters. The three movements represent three languages; Aramaic, Yiddish and Hebrew.
